Benefits of frozen food
Frozen food reduces food waste
Today, a lot of food is produced that never gets eaten, which is bad for both the environment and your wallet. In fact, one third of all food produced in the world is wasted, and according to the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket), a household with two adults and two children throws away edible food worth up to SEK 6,000 per year. The Swedish Food Agency, the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket), and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) have now developed a national action plan to reduce food waste. You can help reduce waste by choosing gluten-free products from the freezer.
Frozen options reduce waste in the store
When it comes to bread, food waste is enormous. 80,000 tonnes of bread are thrown away each year, which equals 260,000 slices of bread per hour—every day, all year round. Often, the bread doesn’t even make it out of the store before it’s thrown away. So if you choose to buy frozen bread when you shop, you help reduce the store’s food waste.
Reduce waste at home and save money
It’s not only stores and the environment that can benefit from buying frozen—it can also make a big difference to your household budget. Frozen products are usually taken out in exactly the amount that will be eaten at one time. That’s one reason why we sell all our loaves pre-sliced. Whatever is left in the bag stays in the freezer, minimizing food waste at home.
P.S. Having trouble using up the heel slices at home? Our tip is to keep a “crust bag” in the freezer where you put all the end pieces that are left over. When the bag is full, you can make breadcrumbs or a delicious Tuscan bread soup!
BUY FROZEN!
Taste and nutrients are preserved through freezing
At Fria, we freeze all products immediately as they come out of the oven, which stops the aging process. This means the product doesn’t have time to start drying out and instead gets the chance to retain its moistness, flavor, and nutritional value until it is thawed. And remember—don’t store bread, buns, and muffins in the fridge, because they dry out and become stale faster.
Can you refreeze thawed products?
It’s usually not a problem, but from a quality perspective it’s best not to refreeze them. Taste it—if it tastes okay, it’s fine to eat. If you think it tastes or smells different, throw it away.
